Bahar Zaf is a collection of travel stories and beautiful things from East Africa.

We showcase authentic, ethical travel experiences: Ones that support local communities; promote wholesome, sustainable food; and that work in some way for a healthier planet.

Bahar Zaf means ‘tree from across the ocean.’ It is the Amharic word for the Eucalypt, brought from Australia during Ethiopia’s imperial time and that today colour the Entoto mountains around the capital Addis Ababa.

BAHAR ZAF MARKET

Bahar Zaf Market brings you natural textiles and handmade jewellery from Ethiopia.

We partner with local artisans and businesses that employ women with fair wages and working conditions to create beautiful, one-off pieces you can feel good about.

We are committed to eco-friendly production methods for a healthier planet. This means choosing to use natural dyes and tanners; sourcing raw materials like cotton from local farms free of harmful pesticides and chemical inputs; and creating jewellery from recycled materials.

Support Ethiopian women and their communities when you buy Bahar Zaf.

In spite of recent development gains, 60% of people in Ethiopia today are considered by the United Nations to be living in extreme poverty. 30% of the population earn less than US$1.26 a day.

In Ethiopia, as in most parts of the world, women and girls often bear the brunt of poverty. They attend fewer years of schooling than do men: Today, 7 in 10 Ethiopian girls will never complete secondary school. Many women suffer health complications in childbirth, face greater barriers to safe employment and have limited access to credit.

We know that when women earn an income, they invest a high portion of their earnings into their families and communities.

By connecting female artisans and entrepreneurs with a global market for their products, Bahar Zaf provides opportunities for Ethiopian women to develop their own businesses and effect change in their own lives.
